The Uygur Autonomous Region of Xinjiang is in the far west of China bordering Pakistan, Kazakhstan, and Mongolia. Jeremy and I traveled to Kashgar, Karakul Lake, Turpan, and Urumqi in the summer of 2010. Turpan is the hottest place in China which the thermometer next the the Monkey King’s Flaming Mountains read 47 Celsius or 116 Fahrenheit, but there was no humidity so it was very pleasant.
